Understanding the Math

Mbps vs MB/s

Internet plans are sold in Megabits per second (Mbps), but your computer downloads files in Megabytes per second (MB/s). There are 8 bits in a byte. So, an 8 Mbps plan actually downloads at 1 MB/s.

Shared Bandwidth

Your total bandwidth is shared across all active devices. If 4 people are watching Netflix on an 8 Mbps plan, each device only gets 2 Mbps (or 256 KB/s). This is why having many devices requires a larger plan.
